Backup on Gaia machine fails with "Cannot complete the backup process: not enough space" Technical Level
Symptoms
  • Backup on a Gaia machine / on a VSX machine with large number of Virtual Systems (more than several dozens) might fail with the following error despite the fact that there is enough free disk space:

    • On Check Point appliances:
      "Cannot complete the backup process: not enough space in /var/log/CPbackup/backups ."

    • On Open Server:
      "Cannot complete the backup process: not enough space in /var/CPbackup/backups ."
  • Example:

    vsx:0>: add backup ftp ip 192.168.40.177 path / username admin password 12345 interactive 
    Creating backup package. Press CTRL+C to exit from interactive mode 
    ftp backup has failed.
    Cannot complete the backup process: not enough space in /var/log/CPbackup/backups . 
    
    vsx:0> expert

Cause

The root cause of the issue is the very high number of files that are passed to TAR utility (eventually, exceeding the OS limit). Therefore, this issue can occur on any system (not only on VSX) when very high number of files are being backed up. Such high number of files is most likely to occur only on VSX with several dozens of VSs. This is the reason that this SK mentions VSX explicitly.
