How to upgrade/migrate Multi-Domain Security Management Server from SecurePlatform OS to Gaia OS
Solution

Introduction:

This article describes a procedure for upgrading/migrating Multi-Domain Security Management Server from SecurePlatform OS to Multi-Domain Security Management on Gaia OS.

The following examples are based on upgrading/migrating from SecurePlatform OS R75 to Gaia OS R75.40, but could be used for other versions as well (if those versions officially support such procedure - refer to Release Notes of the version, to which you upgrade/migrate).

Action plan:

  1. Export the current configuration from Multi-Domain Server on SecurePlatform OS
  2. Install a new Multi-Domain Management Server on Gaia OS
  3. Import the configuration collected from Multi-Domain Server on SecurePlatform OS

Export the current configuration from Multi-Domain Server on SecurePlatform OS R75

  1. Stop all Check Point services:

    [Expert@HostName]# mdsstop

  2. Connect DVD-ROM device / insert DVD disk into DVD-ROM device with the 'Multi-Domain Management Gaia R75.40' disk.

  3. Switch to MDS context:

    [Expert@HostName]# mdsenv
    [Expert@HostName]# mcd

  4. Mount the DVD-ROM disk:

    [Expert@HostName]# mount /mnt/cdrom

    or mount the ISO file:

    [Expert@HostName]# mount -o loop /path_to/Check_Point_R75.40_Gaia_MD.iso /mnt/cdrom

  5. Go to Multi-Domain installation folder:

    [Expert@HostName]# cd /mnt/cdrom/linux/p1_install

  6. Run the installation script

    [Expert@HostName]# ./mds_setup

  7. Export the current Multi-Domain Server configuration by selecting '4' from the following menu:

    (1) Run Pre-upgrade verification only [recommended before upgrade]
    (2) Upgrade to R75.40
    (3) Backup current Multi-Domain Server
    (4) Export current Multi-Domain Server
    Or 'Q' to quit.

  8. Answer the following interactive questions:

Would you like to proceed with the export now [yes/no] ? yes
Please enter target directory for your Multi-Domain Server export (or 'Q' to quit): /var/log
Do you plan to import to a version newer than R75.40 [yes/no] ? no
    Using migrate_tools from disk.
Do you wish to export the log database [yes/no] ? yes

  9. Verify that the following export file has been generated:

    [Expert@HostName]# ls -l /var/log/exported_mds.DDMMYYY-HHMMSS.tgz

Calculate the MD5 for this file:

    [Expert@HostName]# md5sum /var/log/exported_mds.DDMMYYY-HHMMSS.tgz

Install a new Multi-Domain Management Server on Gaia OS R75.40

Important Note: New installation must be made using the identical host name, domain name and Main IP address as the original Multi-Domain Server on SecurePlatform OS R75.

  1. Refer to 'Software Download Matrix - Fresh Installation' in sk67581: Check Point R75.40

  2. Refer to R75.40 Installation and Upgrade Guide - Chapter 4 Installing Multi-Domain Security Management

Import the configuration collected from Multi-Domain Server on SecurePlatform OS R75

  1. Transfer the exported configuration file collected from Multi-Domain Server on SecurePlatform OS R75 (exported_mds.DDMMYYY-HHMMSS.tgz) to the new server into '/var/log' directory.

Note: make sure to use binary mode during the transfer.

Calculate the MD5 for the transferred file and compare to the MD5 that was calculated on original server:

    [Expert@HostName]# md5sum /var/log/exported_mds.DDMMYYY-HHMMSS.tgz

  2. Import the configuration:

    [Expert@HostName]# $MDSDIR/scripts/mds_import.sh /var/log/exported_mds.DDMMYYY-HHMMSS.tgz
