"Wrong Password" after successfully setting Expert Password in Gaia OS Technical Level
Symptoms
  • After setting the password for the Expert mode with the "set expert-password" command, the user gets "Wrong Password" error when trying to enter Expert mode.
  • After setting the password for the Expert mode with the "set expert-password-hash $1$BD'LLQBC$3GABjFVtx.82cDv6m/" command, the user gets "Wrong Password" error when trying to enter Expert mode.
Cause

The Gaia Administration Guide (R75.40, R75.40VS, R76, R77), states what can be in a password in reference to a possible error message, "Password is not complex enough; try mixing more different kinds of characters (upper case, lower case, digits, and punctuation)."

Although the password can include special characters (punctuation (e.g., dot, comma)), the first character cannot be an asterisk (*).

Or if password is being copied and pasted to gateway via a Terminal Server console port there may be hidden special characters which cause the incorrect password to be saved.

Solution

If you have not run the 'save config' command after setting the Expert mode password, reboot the Gaia machine and set a password that starts with anything but an asterisk (*).

If the 'save config' command has been run, recovery will probably require a factory reset, recover to snapshot, or re-installation of product.

If using a Terminal Server console connection either manually type in the "set expert-password-hash" command or login via SSH connection and copy and paste command. Then save config.
