When installing FDE for Windows on a Dell E-series laptop with IRRT enabled, you get "Error initiating volumes" in the FDE error log and the FDE installation aborts Technical Level
Symptoms
  • When installing FDE for Windows on a Dell E-series laptop with IRRT enabled, you get "Error initiating volumes" in the FDE error log and the FDE installation aborts.
Cause

The Dell E-series disk controller is detected as RAID when IRRT is enabled in the BIOS. By default, FDE does not allow installing on systems that have RAID enabled due to problems that may occur when having multiple hard drives set up in a RAID configuration.

Solution

In order to operate with Dell IRRT on systems having only one hard drive attached, Check Point has implemented a new feature in FDE 7.4 HFA1 (R73). This feature enables FDE to be installed even if RAID is detected. To do so it requires manual modification to precheck.txt in order to allow RAID.

There are two recommended methods to install FDE successfully on a Dell E-series machine with IRRT enabled in the BIOS:

Method 1 (recommended)

  1. In the FDE 7.4 HFA1 install package, open precheck.txt
  2. Add the line "AllowRAID=Yes" at the top in the precheck.txt file and save the changes.
Note: RAID has to be capitalized or the setting won't work. For example: "AllowRaid=Yes" won't work, but "AllowRAID=Yes" works. Remember not to have any blank spaces before or after the line, for example
    " AllowRAID=Yes" or "AllowRAID=Yes " won't work.
  3. Install FDE 7.4 HFA1 or higher.

Method 2

  1. In the BIOS, change from "IRRT" to "AHCI".
  2. Boot the OS.
Note: If you encounter any problems from changing the IRRT value in BIOS (e.g. blue screen), please contact Dell Technical Support on how to implement the AHCI drivers, in order to prevent the system from blue screening. Check Point, however, recommends testing "Method 1" before doing so.
  3. Install FDE 7.4 HFA1 or higher.
