Legacy VRRP versus Simplified VRRP configuration on IPSO OS Technical Level
Solution

It is inappropriate to characterize Simplified VRRP configuration versus Legacy VRRP configuration (a.k.a. Full Method), as one being better than the other. The choice is based on customer's requirements of VRRP implementation.

  • Simplified VRRP configuration method offers basic, quick and easy setup of VRRP.
Legacy VRRP configuration requires more attention to details of configuration.

  • Simplified VRRP configuration mode does not offer a feature or two, where Legacy VRRP configuration method offers complete control over all features (specifically preempt mode configuration).
We can characterize the Legacy method of VRRP configuration to be advanced.

  • Simplified VRRP configuration method uses a single VRID to tie-up all backup addresses (Virtual IP addresses).
Legacy VRRP configuration uses a different VRID per backup address.

  • Since Simplified VRRP configuration method uses a single VRID, and if one is using the default VMAC VRRP mode, all the MAC addresses associated with the Virtual IP address have the same MAC address.
If this is not desirable then use VMAC Extended.

Here is an example:

Simplified VRRP configuration using VRID #1 for 4 backup addresses using default "VMAC=VRRP":

        inet 1.1.1.1/24 broadcast 1.1.1.255 vrrpmac 0:0:5e:0:1:1

        inet 2.2.2.1/24 broadcast 2.2.2.255 vrrpmac 0:0:5e:0:1:1

        inet 3.3.3.1/24 broadcast 3.3.3.255 vrrpmac 0:0:5e:0:1:1

        inet 4.4.4.1/24 broadcast 4.4.4.255 vrrpmac 0:0:5e:0:1:1

Same using "VMAC=Extended":

        inet 1.1.1.1/24 broadcast 1.1.1.255 vrrpmac 2:0:5e:fe:c1:1

        inet 2.2.2.1/24 broadcast 2.2.2.255 vrrpmac 2:0:5e:e8:a7:1

        inet 3.3.3.1/24 broadcast 3.3.3.255 vrrpmac 2:0:5e:a2:8d:1

        inet 4.4.4.1/24 broadcast 4.4.4.255 vrrpmac 2:0:5e:3c:73:1
