Staging a very simple IP Multicast (PIM-SSM) lab

You will need an IP-series platform with 2 free interfaces, and 2 LAB PCs. The Lab PCs should have VLC installed

You will also need a media file such as a video or music file, to stream for this lab test.


Here are the steps to lab this:



  1. In IPSO, configure the 2 interfaces with IP addresses and netmask

  2. In the PIM page under routing, set the protocol type to SSM

  3. Turn PIM on for the 2 interfaces you configured

  4. Set the Bootstrap candidate to On, with a local address of one of the interfaces you added to the IPSO box

  5. Set the Candidate-RP to on with the same info as #4

  6. For the Local RP-Set, add 224.0.0.0/4

  7. Open the IGMP page in Voyager and set the version to 3 for all of the active interfaces

  8. Save your changes and you are done the IPSO configuration

  9. On the Multicast sender PC, open VLC, and select File -> Wizard

  10. Select stream to network, and next

  11. Select the media file to stream, and next

  12. Select RTP Multicast and add a group address such as 232.1.1.2, and next

  13. Hit next again as you should not need to set the encoding type

  14. Set the TTL to 30 and select Finish

  15. On the Multicast receiver lab PC, open VLC

  16. Select File -> Open Network Stream

  17. Select UDP/RTP Multicast and set the address to 192.168.100.253@232.1.1.2

  18. Select "Show more options" at the bottom, and strip out the leading rtp://@ so that it looks like rtp://192.168.100.253@232.1.1.2:1234


That should be all of the configurations needed to stream from one segment to another, with PIM-SSM on IPSO.


You can verify the instrumentation on IPSO under the PIM and IGMP pages from Voyager.
