When running the 'passwd' command to change the password, the Expert Mode password is changed Technical Level
Symptoms
  • When logged in as administrator and running passwd to change the password, the Expert Mode password is changed instead of the Standard Mode login password.
Cause

Changing the password in Standard Mode changes the login password.

Changing the password in Expert Mode changes the Expert Mode and GRUB Boot Loader password.

This issue occurs when an administrator's default shell has been changed to /bin/bash. In this shell, the administrator automatically logs into Expert Mode, and running passwd command changes the Expert Mode password and not his Standard Mode password.

Note: Either of the following two methods may have been used to change the default shell of a SecurePlatform administrator:

  1. Manually editing the /etc/passwd file in one of the advanced shells.

  2. Running chsh -s /bin/bash admin to change the default shell of a SecurePlatform administrator.

Caution: The Expert Mode provides the user with full UNIX root permissions and a full UNIX shell. Expert Mode should be used with caution. The flexibility of an open shell with root permission exposes the system to the possibility of administrative errors.
