Console connectivity to SMB 1500 appliance via USB Type A Technical Level
Solution

Overview

This article provides an improved software image to support a serial console access to a Quantum Spark 1530 / 1550 / 1570 / 1590 / 1570R through the USB Type-A port over a serial RS232 cable.

In addition to using the USB Type-A port for connecting an external storage device, an administrator can also connect to the command line on the appliance after the appliance boots.

Note - In contrast to the default serial console USB Type-C port, the serial connection to the USB Type-A port does not show the messages during the appliance boot.

Supported Serial Connections to the USB Type-A Port

  1. Using an RJ45-to-USB-Type-A cable

[Console Server, or Computer with a Terminal Client] (serial RJ45 port) ===>

===> RJ45-to-USB-Type-A cable that includes the FTDI (FT232RL) chip ===>

===> (USB Type-A port) [Quantum Spark Appliance]

  2. Using an RS232-to-USB-Type-A cable

[Console Server, or Computer with a Terminal Client] (RS232 DB9 port) ===>

===> RS232-to-USB-Type-A cable that includes the FTDI (FT232RL) chip ===>

===> (USB Type-A port) [Quantum Spark Appliance]

  3. Using an RS232-to-USB-Type-A cable and RJ45-to-DB9-Adapter

[Console Server, or Computer with a Terminal Client] (RS232 DB9 port) ===>

===> RS232-to-RJ45Adapter, in which the DB9 pin # 2 must be TD (TxD, Transmit Data), and the DB9 pin # 3 must be RD (RxD, Received Data) ===>

===> RJ45-to-USB-Type-A cable that includes the FTDI (FT232RL) chip ===>

===> (USB Type-A port) [Quantum Spark Appliance]
