What is Dead Peer Detection (DPD) Technical Level
A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories. This draft is a work item of the IP Security Protocol Working Group of the IETF. It is A Traffic-Based Method of Detecting Dead IKE Peers. This draft describes a method of detecting a dead IKE peer. The method, called Dead Peer Detection (DPD) uses IPSec traffic patterns to limit the number of IKE messages sent. DPD, like other keepalive mechanisms, is often necessary to perform IKE peer failover, or to reclaim lost resources.

Please note that Check Point VPN products do not use this method.
