Root partition is at 100%, but the 'du' command does not find which files consume the space Technical Level
Symptoms
  • Output of the 'df -k' command shows that the root (/) partition is at 100%.

Or that the /dev/mapper/vg_splat-lv_log partition is at 100%.

  • The 'du' command does not find which files are consuming the space (e.g., "du -hcx --max-depth=1 / | sort -n -r", "du -hcx --max-depth=1 /var | sort -n -r", "du -hcx --max-depth=1 /opt | sort -n -r").

  • The 'find / -type f -size +50000k -exec ls -lh {} \;' command does not find which files are consuming the space.

Cause

A process running in the background is keeping one (or more) large deleted file(s) opened.
