MDS OS level backup fails or the backup file is extremely small Technical Level
Symptoms
  • Multi-Domain Management server (MDS) creates a snapshot during the OS level backup procedure, causing the backup to fail or be extremely small.

  • Getting the following messages in the logs during the backup process:
    [DATE TIME] kernel: device-mapper: snapshots: Invalidating snapshot: Unable to allocate exception.
    [DATE TIME] kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
    [DATE TIME] kernel: dm-7: rw=17, want=4194320, limit=4194304
    [DATE TIME] kernel: EXT3-fs error (device dm-5): ext3_find_entry: reading directory #4505612 offset 0
    [DATE TIME] kernel: Aborting journal on device dm-5.
    [DATE TIME] kernel: Buffer I/O error on device dm-5, logical block 1545
    [DATE TIME] kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on dm-5
    [DATE TIME] kernel: Buffer I/O error on device dm-5, logical block 0
    [DATE TIME] kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on dm-5
    [DATE TIME] kernel: EXT3-fs error (device dm-5): ext3_get_inode_loc: unable to read inode block - inode=20873217, block=41746434
