Setting state of interface to "off" on Gaia OS does not turn off the link on that interface Technical Level
Symptoms
  • In the Gaia operating system, when users set the state of an interface to "off," the link on that interface does not turn off.

    1. Set the state of interface to "off":

      • Either in Gaia Portal:

Go to Network Management section - click on Network Interfaces - select the interface - click on Edit button - clear the box Enable - click on OK
      • Or in Gaia Clish:

HostName> set interface <NAME> state off
    2. Check the link on Gaia OS:

      [Expert@HostName:0]# ethtool <NAME>

      Output shows:

      Link detected: yes
    3. Interface's LED on Gaia machine stays on (no data, not blinking).

    4. On switch, the corresponding port is still "up" (operational status).

Cause

There is a cosmetic issue with e1000e driver versions lower than 2.2.14.

To confirm that this is the cause of the problem:

  1. Do one of these to set the state of the interface to "off":

    • In Gaia Portal:

      1. Go to the Network Management section
      2. Click Network Interfaces
      3. Select the interface.
      4. Click the Edit button.
      5. Clear the Enable box.
      6. Click OK.
    • In Gaia Clish: Enter these commands: HostName>set interface state off

  2. In Gaia Clish, enter these commands to check the link: [Expert@HostName:0]# ethtool <NAME>

    The output shows:

    Link detected: yes

The interface's LED on the Gaia machine stays on (no data, not blinking).

On the switch, the corresponding port is still "up" (operational status).
