"URL Filtering / Application control is not responding" message in SmartView Monitor Technical Level
Symptoms
  • Errors in SmartView Monitor after gateway upgrade:
    • ERROR: 'Application Control' is not responding. Verify that 'Application Control' is installed on the gateway. If 'Application Control' should not be installed verify that it is not selected in the Products List of the gateway (SmartDashboard > Security Gateway > General Properties > Software Blades List).
    • ERROR: 'URL Filtering' is not responding. Verify that 'URL Filtering' is installed on the gateway. If 'URL Filtering' should not be installed verify that it is not selected in the Products List of the gateway (SmartDashboard > Security Gateway > General Properties > Software Blades List).

  • Security Gateway was not rebooted after upgrade, neither were the Check Point services restarted with cpstop;cpstart commands.

  • The $FWDIR/appi/update/appi_status.C file has been replaced from a new installation and is up to date.

  • The cpstat appi -f subscription_status or/and cpstat urlf -f subscription_status shows an empty values.
Cause

Some mechanisms in SmartView Monitor will not be refreshed until a cpstop;cpstart or machine reboot have been performed.

This can be tested by deleting the appi_status.C file while the services are running and seeing that SmartView Monitor will continue to show "OK" until a reboot or cpstop;cpstart.

APPI/URLF statuses are handled periodically in user mode by CPD process.
CPD process samples $FWDIR/appi/update/appi_status.C file every minute and writes it to the shared memory.
