Security Gateway running on Gaia OS randomly becomes unresponsive when DLP blade is configured with Fingerprinting and external storage repository is used
Symptoms
  • Security Gateway running on Gaia OS randomly becomes unresponsive:

    • Not possible to connect with SSH
    • All SNMP queries to the machine time out
    • VPN tunnels can be disrupted
    • Clish and Expert mode commands do not work or hang
    • DLP Fingerprinting appears to get stuck and will remain on beyond the configure times
  • Output of "top" / "ps auxw" command during the issue does not show any excessive CPU utilization.

  • Output of ""ps auxw" command during the issue shows that confd daemon is in the "D" state (deep sleep) and it does not respond to the "kill" command.

  • There are no core dump files in the /var/log/dump/usermode/ directory (per sk92764).

  • Reboot resolves the issue only temporarily.

  • Disabling all scheduled tasks under DLP -> Repositories resolves the issue.

  • Disabling DLP Fingerprinting resolves the issue.

Cause

Output of "strace" utility attached to confd daemon showed that a sync() system call (which synchronizes memory buffers with HDD) causes the confd daemon to stuck ("sync()" is the last line in the output). Therefore, console and Clish are not accessible, making large part of the system hang when it is trying to communicate with confd daemon.
