Objects and policies are not restored from Gaia Backup, although the restore operation succeeded Technical Level
Symptoms
  • Objects and policies are not restored from Gaia Backup, although the restore operation succeeded:

    1. Gaia Backup file was collected (successfully).
    2. Security Management Server was upgraded, or installed from the scratch.
    3. Restored from Gaia Backup file (successfully).
    4. SmartDashboard shows only default objects (when you install from the scratch) and none of the policies.
  • The restore log file backup_<HostName>_<Date_Time>.restore.log does not show that the "cp_product" group was restored:

    [Date Time]: <<<<<< Start Restore >>>>>>
    [Date Time]: group system
    [Date Time]: pkg_file /var/CPbackup/backups/backup_<HostName>_<Date_Time>.tgz
    [Date Time]: Restore parameters:
    [Date Time]: 1. 'file_list' -> 'SCALAR(0x...)'
    [Date Time]: 2. 'package_path' -> '/var/CPbackup/backups'
    [Date Time]: 3. 'restore_type' -> 'restore'
    [Date Time]: 4. 'package_name' -> 'backup_<HostName>_<Date_Time>.tgz'
    [Date Time]: 5. 'group_list' -> 'ARRAY(0x...)'
    [Date Time]: Info:'cleanup': /var/CPsnapshot/tmp/tmp/signature has been removed.

  • When comparing the $CPDIR/registry/HKLM.registry files inside the Backup TGZ file and on the Security Management Server after the restore operation, you see that multiple Check Point products are missing in section ": (Products".

Cause

The restore operation does not validate strictly enough the list of installed products on the machine where the Gaia Backup file is being restored (compared to the list of installed products inside the Gaia Backup file).
