Intermittent outages of TCP traffic on 10GbE interfaces in IP Appliances running Gaia OS
Symptoms
  • Intermittent outages of TCP traffic on 10GbE interfaces in IP Appliances running Gaia OS.

  • When SecureXL is enabled, 10GbE interfaces are flapping and "Detected Tx Unit Hang" appears in /var/log/messages file.

  • When SecureXL is disabled, the packets are not leaving the 10GbE interface (they are discarded on the OS level).

  • Output of 'ethtool -k <Name_of_10GbE_Interface>' command shows:
    tcp segmentation offload: off

Cause

The problem happens when 10Gbps interface is the incoming interface, while the hang/packet lose occurs on the outgoing interface. The issue is caused by the TCP Segmentation Offload (TSO) being enabled on the 10Gbps interfaces.
